DWELL (article first published : 2005-03-27)

dwell is the title of an exhibition taking place at artSPACE Durban from April 4 to 23, with the opening taking place at 18h30 on April 4.

The definitions of dwell are as follows: dwell (in) - to make one's abode or live in a specified place of dwell (on) - to think, speak or write (or paint) a lot about.

The exhibition dwell is an interpretation on the above, through the medium of oil paint, by three artists living in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.

jennie castle (jc), louise jennings (lj) and jeannie kinsler (jk) explore the theme with ideas and approaches that overlap while at the same time remaining very personal. A mutual love of paint on canvas is one of the many connections between these three artists, with their work revealing the beauty of the everyday images that make up their lives.

jc: in this body of work, it is the linear marks of an architectural plan which weave together the inhabitants of a dwelling.

lj: ‘Stills’ – almost Vermeer-like – capture the serene essence of simple, everyday objects that are precious to the artist.

jk: In both vertical and horizontal planes, the artist explores images in the home – the works reveal the poetry in the curve of limb or the shadow in a bowl.
