SA ART INFORMATION DIRECTORY 05 (article first published : 2005-03-1)

The South African ART INFORMATION Directory 05 (SAAID) gives the most complete listing of visual art sources in the country. Included are galleries, museums, dealers, service industries, artists, designers, art media, and arts education.

Itís set out in a rational manner and looking up information about something in any of the above areas is fairly easy.

Thereís a time frame which tells you exactly whatís happening in the art world anywhere during each month taking in major festivals and closing dates.

All 11 provinces are represented. Nothing has escaped the beady eye of Editor Gabriel Clark-Brown. He writes: ďI believe that the growth of this directory in two short years fulfills a great need in the South Africa art community.Ē And ... .he is spot on!

This publication, if used properly to get information, can really help any artist on his way and gives comprehensive information about a host of things. It tells you where you can buy your art materials, who teaches art, what studios are open in your area, which gallery or museum to visit. Itís significant that museums and galleries have supported the directory and opening and closing times, telephone numbers etc - itís all there.

Another important aspect of this directory is the comprehensive information on who to contact and where to apply to get funding for projects or for individual purposes.

The book ends with listing international art fairs and dates; contemporary international events and juried competitions and competitions. It is quite astonishing to see how many art competitions are run globally.

What makes it interesting to browse through Ė page after page - is the colourful adverts from galleries and individual artists. It makes for a lively viewing through all the info, but there could be more. Most galleries have listed some of their stable artists, while other galleries promoted art exhibitions or individual artists.

Itís the private sector which should come on board.

The directory relies on advertising and one can only urge art organisations and artists to support the 2006 publication. The directory is available from Exclusive Books at a price of R139.
