CRITICAL VOICES (article first published : 2005-02-25)

The deadline is March 1 for those who wish to attend Critical voices hosted by the NSA Gallery and run as part of the NSA Young Artists Project as an ongoing initiative to support new and experimental work.

The NSA Gallery has great pleasure in inviting expressions of interest to participate in a comprehensive critical writing workshop during April 2005 with Sean O’Toole, one of South Africa’s prominent voices in the visual arts.

In keeping with the aims of growing contemporary art discourse, the Young Artists' Project will expand its initiatives to include an annual critical writing workshop, generously funded by the Royal Netherlands Embassy for the next three years. It is intended that this workshop will systematically and professionally empower new voices with the skills for analytical and critical reflection on contemporary art, through writing.

The workshop will be hosted over four consecutive weeks, during a total of eight sessions (one session per day). Interested individuals are invited to send in an example of their writing (at least 500 words) as well as a brief CV. The workshop is free of charge to participants, and successful candidates will be asked to sign a form of commitment to complete the course.

The dates of the workshop are April 1 and 2, April 8 and 9, April 15 and 16; and April 22 and 23. Times of workshops are: Fridays (10h00 and 16h00) and Saturdays (10h00 and 13h00).

The workshop is open to any person with a postgraduate qualification, preferably with a major in visual arts, journalism or general arts degree/diploma, and with a proven interest in contemporary arts practice. Also welcome are artists, writers, curators, arts administrators and/or those active in the visual arts world.

All submissions to be in hardcopy as well as on disk/CD. A letter of motivation for participation and stated availability for duration of the course; a 500 word example of recent writing on a subject of your choice and a short CV. Documentation must be delivered or emailed to reach the NSA Gallery no later than March 1.

An experienced freelance journalist, editor and art critic, Sean O'Toole’s writing tends to reflect his variety of interests, ranging from in-depth news features to articles on art, design and architecture. He has written for titles as diverse as: Sunday Times, Mail & Guardian, Business Day, Art South Africa, Art in America, BBC Focus on Africa, Colors (Italy), Eye (UK), Blueprint (UK), Itch, GQ, New Contrast, Kyoto Journal (Japan/USA), amongst others.

Currently editor of Art South Africa, O’Toole previously edited www.artthrob.co.za and Design Indaba Magazine and is a regular contributor/columnist for the Sunday Times. He was a finalist for two Mondi magazine writing awards in 2003, also a finalist for the 2003 Arts and Culture Trust journalist of the year. He previously won the 2002 SL short fiction contest, judged by Ashraf Jamal, and is currently completing an MA in Creative Writing at UCT, under the supervision of poet Joan Hambidge. He has curated two photographic exhibitions, at the KKNK 2003, and was a judge for the 2003 DaimlerChrysler Art Award.
