FIRST TOUCH (article first published : 2005-02-25)

On February 26 at 14h00, the BAT Centre will be officially opening the First Touch exhibition.

This is an exhibition by a group of young artists who will be showcasing their talent for the first time to the public. The ceramic works are produced by a group of second year DIT students who are called Sibambene (“We are together”). The group was formed in 2004 with the aim of uplifting ceramic artists and they are keen to make the community aware of their potential and explore issues about their culture.

The group is composed of Armstrong Masondo, Mxolisi Sithole, Nozipho Zulu, Sibonelo Luthuli, Siyabonga Khoza and Siyanda Makhathini. These affordable art pieces will be displayed until March 9 in the Menzi Mcunu Gallery and include unique representations of items such as the Zulu pot. These designs are authentic vessels incorporating contemporary design and sculptural figures.
