INTERFACE ANIMATION FESTIVAL (article first published : 2005-02-21)

The organisers of the Interface Animation Festival have extended the deadline for submissions to May 23.

It is the intention of the INTERFACE Animation Festival to draw in a wide range of animations from all over South Africa; works can be in any medium (e.g. claymation, stop-frame, Flash, digital 3D etc.....) and on any “non-commercial” subject. Already we have made contact with some animators who are busy working on exciting original animations with a view to screening them at the Festival.

Animation allows the artist to enter new realms and speak of every dimension of human experience in visually explosive and fantastical ways. It is a celebration of this dimension of animation that we wish to promote at the Festival.

The Alliance Française (Durban) in its bid to bring the people of Durban together, around new, exciting and innovative ideas and events, are launching the INTERFACE Animation Festival, in conjunction with the Durban Animation Network, and the Umcebo Trust. It is hoped that this festival will become an annual event.

All animators who are interested in submitting work should make contact with Robin Opperman (see details below) as soon as possible. You may also submit an existing animation providing it has not already been screened within South Africa at a similar event.

The launch function will be held at the Alliance Française on Friday June 10th 2005 at 18h00. There will be no prizes or winners – the idea is to give exposure to the animation genre in all it’s forms and diversity.

No remuneration or monetary exchanges will take place, i.e. all work is submitted voluntarily for use and the Festival will not benefit financially in any way from your animation/s. Should the Festival committee be approached about a particular work, the interested party will be referred directly to the animator/s for private negotiations.

“We are very pleased with the response so far to the festival,” says Robin Opperman, Festival Organiser. “There has been a tremendous amount of interest generated from a wide variety of animators and we look forward to receiving a diverse range of entries.

“Although the date of March 1 still stands for submission of something for use in the promotional material, some animators have requested that we allow them to still submit their animations for the final festival date of May 23 even if they are unable to forward something the March 1 deadline. We have decided that this is okay – but May 23 is a final final date.”

“We have also had some queries about animations that do not meet the 3-10 minute duration rule,” says Robin. “This is a guideline. If you have something that is shorter or longer than this recommended duration, by all means submit it for consideration; we don't want to miss out on something worthwhile over this rule. Our main aim is to attract the best possible work, and we therefore want to be as flexible as possible in order to ensure that this takes place.”
