SORIANO AND FERGUSON (article first published : 1999-11-23)

In an exhibition opening at 15h00 on Sunday (November 29), Leon Soriano and Ian Ferguson will show a collection of etchings in the NSA’s Park Gallery.

Leon Soriano’s evocative etchings rely on strong rugged lines and reflect everyday activity. He also explores notions of “African-ness”, whether that of yesterday or a contemporary African identity. The coloured etchings on the exhibition are all unique, with no editions.

Ian Ferguson obtained his doctorate at the University of South Africa and served as professor of English there from 1984 until his retirement three years ago. In 1997, he became interested in the medium of etching and studied etching techniques under the guidance of Gail Machanik. While art is a comparatively recent development in his creative life, he still draws strongly on literary images in his work.
