2007 SPECIAL OLYMPICS WORLD GAMES (article first published : 2004-12-13)

Special Olympics is an international organization that changes lives by promoting understanding, acceptance and inclusion between people with and without intellectual disabilities.

The 2007 Special Olympics World Games Steering Committee has announced the official design competition for 2007 Special Olympics World Games Shanghai. The call was made to the world’s creative arts community for theme, logo and 2005 public service announcement (PSA) submissions.

Graphic designers and film producers throughout the world have already expressed interest in the competition and the selection committee is expecting submissions from a wide variety of talented artists. In accordance with the international nature of the competition, entries from artists of all nationalities will be welcome. The theme of the competition is “sport as celebration and inclusion”.

“We look forward to receiving entries from throughout the world, which encourage the Special Olympics goal of changing attitudes,” said Dr Shi Derong, Vice Secretary General 2007 Special Olympics World Games Steering Committee. “The selection of the theme, logo and PSA are important milestones as we get closer to 2007 as these design elements will embody the look and feel of the upcoming Special Olympics World Games. They will define the spirit of the games and motivate athlete and spectator alike.”

Submissions for theme should be concise, comprehensive and easily understood. The theme should emphasize community efforts to include and accept people with intellectual disabilities. Logo designs should be colorful, lively and two-dimensional. The logo will be expected to convey both Western and Chinese design characteristics. 30-second PSA submissions, acceptable in DVD and VCD formats, should convey the nature and spirit of Special Olympics. The PSA must consist of images and music rather than language, and should be emotive and moving.

The international Selection Committee responsible for judging the entries will include executive members of the 2007 Special Olympics World Games Steering Committee, officials from Special Olympics International and well-known Chinese artists. As public opinion will also be taken into account, the Selection Committee encourages all supporters to visit the 2007 World Games website and vote online for their favorite submissions.

All design submissions must be received by the committee no later than January 1, 2005.

The prize money for winners in each category: theme creator RMB 200,000; logo designer RMB 200,000; and PSA producer RMB 300,000.

A public service announcement, advertising the call for submissions, has been produced by Special Olympics’ long time supporter Star Group Ltd, and will be aired internationally. The design competition is sponsored by AstraZeneca, a 2007 Special Olympics World Games ‘Friend of the Games’ sponsor.

Application forms can be downloaded from the official website of the 2007 Special Olympics World Games at www.2007specialolympics.com
