SIYABONGA SIKOSANA (article first published : 2004-12-6)

Siyabonga Sikosana has been invited by the Tatham Art Gallery to present a solo exhibition in its West Gallery from December 9 to January 16, 2005. His work will focus on township scenes.

The Friends of the Tatham Art Gallery, who have sponsored grants towards Siyabonga’s studies and materials in the past, are hosting the opening function hosted by Mduduzi Xakaza, TAG Education Officer, on December 9 at 18h00.

Siyabonga was born in Willowfountain near Pietermaritzburg in 1978 and joined Mdu Xakaza’s Thursday art classes at the Tatham Art Gallery as a scholar. After matriculating with high marks in art, he studied Textile Design at the Institute of Technology in Durban. Siyabonga has worked in a wide variety of media, such as burnt wooden panels, woodcuts, linocuts, ceramics and sculpture. He has also been commissioned to do murals, stage backdrops and illustrations for the National Botanical Institute. Siyabonga is mainly known for his vivid landscapes and scenes of township life in acrylics or oil on board or canvas. His work hangs in private and public collections in South Africa and abroad.

On December 10 from 13h10 Siyabonga will lead a walkabout of his exhibition in the West Gallery from where he will be working as artist-in-residence from January 5 to 7. His work will serve as reference material for a number of children’s workshops on landscape drawing and painting, which will be held in the Gallery at that time.

The Tatham Art Gallery is situated on the corner of Longmarket Street and Commercial Road in Pietermarizburg opposite the City Hall.
