MARION TOWNSEND (article first published : 2004-11-3)

Born in 1950 in Johannesburg, Marion attended St Theresa’s Convent in Rosebank and here at an early age showed an aptitude for art. After matriculating and whilst attending teachers training college, she also studied art at the Johannesburg Art School in the evenings.

During the years, Marion has attended workshops given by South Africa’s leading artists, such as Richard Rennie, George Boys, Peter Hall, Enslin Vorster. She has been a member of the Watercolour Society of South Africa since 1990. In 1995, she gained her Associateship and in 1998 became the chairperson of the Johannesburg branch.

She held her first solo exhibition in 1995 and has since participated in many group exhibitions. In 2002 she gained second place in the Windsor & Newton National Painting Competition called “Brushstrokes”. Her work is exhibited in various national galleries and private collections in South Africa, United Kingdom, United States of America, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Germany, Switzerland, Swaziland and Lesotho. The niece of the renowned Polish Impressionist, Marian Mokwa, she is also an active teacher, running monthly workshops in Clarens, Free State.

Marion Townsend will exhibit her work at the Blue Caterpillar from November 13 to 30. All are welcome to the opening evening on November 12 at 18h30. The evening will be opened by wellknown artist John Smith whose work appears in individual collections of former presidents FW De Klerk and Nelson Mandela. He is also founder of Kwazumva KZN Visual Arts, a council and committee member of the NSA Gallery, and a committee member of the Visual Arts Network of South Africa)
