NEVER TOO LATE (article first published : 1999-11-22)

Well-known artist John Smith must be very proud of his pupil, Don King. Yesterday Don walked off with a prize for three paintings at the annual exhibition of the North Coast Art Group. He received the prestigious MOAG award for his painting Durban Yacht Mole and two of his paintings Lower Slaughter and Bridge on Dartmoor tied for The Most Promising Newcomer trophy. Not a bad achievement at any level but Don King has only been studying art seriously for just over a year! Retired after spending most of his life in the paper and print business, he decided to haul out of storage a 30 year-old box of paints once given to him by his mother.

Other NCAG winners were Jane Foote whose hand-coloured etching Worship his Majesty won the trophy for best work in the alternative art category. Her expressive hand coloured etching Ducks received a highly commended. Jennifer Pennington was awarded a merit for her pen and ink work View from the 15th Floor in the best drawing category.

Artists who works received special commendation were Maureen de Moor, Julia Smith, Eda Charlton, Delene Webb, Moira Macdonald, Anneke de Plooy, Jess Dobie and Sheila Penfold. The exhibition was opened by well-known watercolourist Wendy Amm who paid tribute to Meta Orton who was one of the founder members of the group and highly respected for her drawing and teaching skills. Meta Orton has been forced to withdraw from active membership because of ill health. The exhibition is on display at the Alliance Franšaise until November
