MARIANNE MEIJER (article first published : 2004-10-28)

Hosted by Bonisa’s Neil and Liesel Wright, Durban artist Marianne Meijer will present a solo exhibition of recent paintings at the quaint thatched Bonisa Private Gallery throughout November.

Marianne Meijer's solo exhibition will show a variety of work, including paintings of faces, still life and landscape. Her work is realistic and expressionistic. Working in acrylics and oils, her aim is not to paint what real things are like, but to paint intuitively what things are (to her) really like, thus relying on abstractions and ideas in her mind, so that each new work is a challenge.

Certainly no stranger to art making, Marianne Meijer has exhibited many times over the years in group exhibitions and solo shows at the NSA Gallery. Two of her works are in the permanent collection of the Durban Art Gallery. She is also known as art columnist and contributor to the development of visual art and artists through her long connection with the NSA, where she is in charge of the Training Arts Programme.

"Her works have a confidence, clarity of focus, and a vision that is hewn from a lifetime of dedicated art making,” says art curator Bren Brophy. “The paintings are as simple or as complicated as the viewer makes them. Meijer's works are evocative rather than descriptive of a familiar subject. Her works give voice to a collective pathos we call life."

There will be an Open Day on November 7 from 10h00 to 16h00 with the Artist-in-Residence. As usual John Simpson will also be present, working on his Japanese styled cards.

A special viewing particularly for interested interior designers, decorators and art collectors will take place on November 10 at 10h00.

Visitors are welcome throughout the month, by appointment. Bonisa is a comfortable, flexible, relatively new gallery space that can be found at 47 Ronalds Rd, Kloof. For directions or more information, phone 031 764 0288. Visit the gallery's website to preview some of the artwork and to register for further gallery news: www.bonisa.co.za
