MARTIN LAYTON (article first published : 2004-10-7)

The Blue Caterpillar Art Gallery in Pietermaritzburg is currently hosting an exhibition of woks by Martin Layton.

Several weeks ago, Raymond Mhlaba (former premier of the Eastern Cape), requested one of Martin's paintings as a gift from himself to Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands.

Martin Layton was born in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England. He likes to call his work Dimensionalism, believing that it could be described as surrealistic with realistic overtones. The works deal with the known and unknown environments, transcending physical time and place with objects and places being both real and abstract.
