EMAKETHE (AT THE MARKET) (article first published : 2004-10-1)

Opening on October 7 in the Menzi Mcunu Gallery at the BAT Centre will be Emakethe (at the market), featuring art installations by Njabulo Mtshali.

Njabulo Mtshali was born in Mandini, KwaZulu Natal and received his first training in art at Tugela Secondary School in 1991. He pursued art further at Technikon Natal (now Durban Institute of Technology) where he received his Fine Art Diploma in 2000 majoring in photography and printmaking. After he completed the Fine Art course he moved to Johannesburg where he worked as Head of Design and a factory manager as Eco Art. He also got a job a sale representative for Durant Sihlali under the company called Umhlanga Paper studios.

This vibrant artist has exhibited in many national gallery like the Durban Art Gallery - Biennale, Rhodes University, and has recently exhibited in the Gazebo Red Eye Art exhibition which was held at the Durban Art Gallery and Nowayouth a multicultural music and visual art festival. He has worked mainly in the medium of printmaking and has later developed his work to art installations. Lately he has been attracted by the art of the potato, to create art installations.
