MARTIN LAYTON (article first published : 2004-09-12)

Martin Layton was born in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England. He likes to call his work Dimensionalism, believing that it could be described as surrealistic with realistic overtones. The works deal with the known and unknown environments, transcending physical time and place with objects and places being both real and abstract.

Technology has played a big role in his work as Martin pursued his career in the Electro-medical field in New Zealand.

After returning to South Africa and settling in East London, the importance of perspective and working to a point of infinity was realised. Continuing in the electronic field, he worked in the lab at Tek Electronics as a design technician.

In the electronic media, a process of colour subtraction is used with white being the reference, and the primary colours of red, green and blue being used to achieve this. This, to a large degree, has been an influence on the way he thinks and portrays colour in his work.

His works are found in numerous private collections and business collections both nationally and internationally.

Martin, who has not exhibited in KZN before, will be present at the opening of his exhibition on September 10 at 15h00. The evening will be opened by D.R. Bronner HDE(Art), (Senior Lecturer, Graphic Design Department, Durban Institute of Technology). Thereafter the works will be on view and for sale at the Blue Caterpillar Art Gallery until October 22. To contact the gallery please call 033 387 1356 or art@butterflies.co.za.
