SHIRLEY HOWELLS WORKSHOP (article first published : 2004-08-28)

Well-known Durban artist Shirley Howells is to conduct a workshop at Misty Mountains in Nottingham Road.from September 30 to October 3. The subject matter is wide and artists in all media are welcome.

“A number of people have shown an interest in doing portraits exclusively for the weekend and, as a consequence, I will have a separate group concentrating on portraiture in all media,” says Shirely. If this is your thing, and you are interested in attending, you will need to come armed with a mirror! Let me know.”

The workshop is also attracting artists who focus on landscapes, florals and still life and Shirley will provide a few different set-ups of still life and floral arrangements. Landscape artists should bring their own source material (photos etc).

The cost per person sharing is R230 (dinner, bed and breakfast) – for those who wish to “be alone” the cost is R300, The art course costs R120 per day. For those just coming up for a day the fee is R150 (art course R120, R30 studio fee plus a light lunch and teas.)

“People get together with other artists, have uninterrupted time to paint and really tap into your creativity and the added bonus is no household or other chores to break into your time,” adds Shirley. “The accommodation is great and the food excellent. Bring your own wine for enjoying as we sit round the fire before dinner. The evenings are free to watch art videos, talk over the day, just relax or if the bug has really bitten, the studio is open and you can paint for as long as you like.”
