DOWN TO EARTH (article first published : 2004-08-26)

Pascale Chandler is exhibiting a new body of work developed since her last exhibition at the NSA Gallery in 2000. A well-known Durban artist, she runs a respected painting studio from her home in Glenwood. Her works are presented in public collections, such as the Durban Art Gallery and the Durban Institute of Technology.

Chandler will present an installation of painted and photographic works in the Mezzanine Gallery, with the photographic reference running as a conceptual “frame” for the paintings. The photographic reference depicts pedestrian routes, fragments of objects and urban waste.

These everyday elements, placed in specific relation to each other, take on a new and powerful meaning. The concern has been to capture moments that shift the status of ordinary objects; to present the viewer with discarded straw brooms, disposable ice-bear - all artifacts of our time - yet transforming them into archaeological relics, revealing human pathos and weakness.

“The gathering process is an occupational hazard,” says Pascale. “I don’t drive. I walk. I collect that which the city sheds. I photographically record and collect everyday existence; camera tilting down, I capture random objects. And then at other times I go about my work in a more systematic, site specific and selective manner.”

The exhibition runs untill September12. For more information contact Storm Janse van Rensburg (Curator) at the NSA Gallery, 166 Bulwer Road, Glenwood, Durban 4001 on 031 202 3686, fax 031 201 8051, e-mail: curator@nsagallery.co.za or visit www.nsagallery.co.za
