JACKIE THE KID (article first published : 2004-08-16)

An exhibition of paintings and animation by Theresa-Anne Mackintosh is soon to open in the Main Gallery and Multimedia Room of the NSA. Titled Jackie the Kid, this will be her second solo show.‘

After having completed her MA (Fine Arts) degree at the University of Pretoria, Mackintosh joined a broadcast design and animation company in Johannesburg to further explore her interest in animation. She works as a painter and also in ‘new media’ and her work straddles these two seemingly disparate worlds. In Mackintosh’s universe though, these two feed each other, and a conversation exists between her two-dimensional work and animated pieces. It is through this work that the artist charts new possibilities in both media.

Stylistically, the work draws on varied sources, from the work of Marlene Dumas to social commentators like David Shrigley, urban vinyl protagonists like Eric So and David Horvath to the contemporary Japanese Pop Art scene that include figures such as Yoshitomo Nara and Aya Takano. As her influences suggest, the work brings together a number of contrasting spaces, namely that of an interior dream space, and an exterior humdrum reality, or, that of gritty real life with the luminescent, almost naïve character of contemporary popular culture.

On show will be her new digital animation that forms the core component of the show. Though she uses digital platforms, Mackintosh’s work remains rooted in her painterly iconography.

The animated short Jackie the Kid explores a morning in the life of “Tina” the main character, after she experiences something rather unusual. Tina is a headstrong character on a mission. On her journey she crosses the paths of strangers who do not know each other. Each has his or her own thoughts, as we know, daydreams and visions are part of us all. These secret daydreams are revelations only known by the thinker. Everybody deals with something private in his or her head. The contents of these characters’ dreams are what the short film suggestively, and through imaginative imagery shows us. While Tina’s focus is on accomplishing what she set out to do, dreamscapes and private thoughts are abound.

In addition to the animation will be paintings, digital graphic prints inspired by the animation as well as 3D clone fibreglass sculptures of “Tina”.

Jackie the Kid runs at the NSA Gallery from August 24 at 18h00 to September 12.
