SEKUNJALO (article first published : 2004-07-10)

Sekunjalo is an exhibition by Jabulani Mhlabini, a young man from Pietermaritzburg who started playing with clay from an early age copying his mother Dorah's skills. She gaver her son a legacy on making pots passed down by her own father.

Jabulani has refined this art by creating interesting pots shaped after images of people and events, telling stories through them. After leaving school, he took the brave step of working on his art full-time. Far from rebuking him for taking such an untraditional career, his mother supports and encourages him to continue his family legacy and transfer it to the next generation.

Jabulani has been involved in several projects which include the teaching of pottery. He produced his own works at the Pietermaritzburg Arts Project and later on went to start an arts project at the Voortrekker Museum in Pietermaritzburg in 1998. In 2000, he left briefly for the United States to participate in the field of arts youth outreach through the council of international programs in Chicago.

He is currently working with fellow artists on a joint project called Ababumbi Arts and Ceramics in Pietermaritzburg at the Umsunduzi Arts and Culture Centre where he also has his own studio producing his latest works.

Sekunjalo runs until August 3. For more information contact Nontobeko Ntombela on 031 332 0451.
