SUBMERGED MINDSCAPE (article first published : 2004-06-24)

Tamasa Gallery will host an exhibition of paintings by Kristin Hua Yang titled Submerged Mindscape until July 10.

Kristin Hua Yang is a young artist living and working in Pietermaritzburg. She graduated with a MA FineArt at the Centre for Visual Arts, University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg. She has participated in numerous exhibitions in China and in South Africa.

The exhibition comprises works depicting Kristin's mastery of different medium, using a combination of simple colours in pale shades and deep tones. She has chosen fish as a representation of life, either rigid or in movement in the surrounding fluid medium .The fish are isolated, symbolising a yearning to break through the restrictions of rationality and logic by means of intuition and creativity. This struggle frequently takes place in everyone's mindscape, whether submerged or not.

Between 1990 and 1999, Kristin appeared on numerous exhibitions in China. She presented a solo exhibition at Jack Heath Gallery, University of KwaZulu-Natal in 2001. This was followed in 2002 with a Student Art Exhibition at the University of Pretoria by the University of KwaZulu-Natal. She also featured in the 2003 Woman's Day Exhibition at the Durban Art Gallery.

Kristin has been chosen as one of the finalists to represent KwaZulu-Natal for the Absa L'Atelier Art Award for 2004.
