OF COURSE … (article first published : 2004-06-14)

A brand new concept in leisure breaks will be launched on July 1 at the Riebeeck Valley Hotel, Riebeek West.

The brainchild of Greg and Lynne Smit, “Of Course . . .” is based on the premise that there is nothing more satisfying than learning a new skill, and that people learn best when they are totally relaxed. “Of Course . . .” gives one the chance to expand the mind, broaden the horizons and take a well-deserved break.

“Believing in teaching what one wants to learn, the “Of Course . . .” pizza principle comes to play: building the experience onto the basics on offer,” says Lynne Smit. “And like a pizza, it can be delivered at the venue of one’s choice, or you can let us pamper you at the beautiful Riebeek Valley Hotel. A sense of fun, adventure and willingness to learn is all that is required for these courses along with a 35mm camera for the photography courses. Everything else is included: Luxury accommodation, all meals, transport from Cape Town International Airport or one’s base in Cape Town, field trip transport, materials such as canvas, art bag, paints and brushes, developing of photographs and tuition.”

On offer is a two-day photography course tutors by Deryck van Steenderen, one of Cape Town’s top professional photographers. He studied at the School Modern Photography in Johannesburg and has been taking pictures since he was 15. His first exhibition at the age of 18 was part of a press photography expose on life in Alexandria. He has worked with some of the top photographers in the world. His published work includes still life, portraits, cars, illustration and fashion. He works for a number of South Africa’s most prestigious magazines and has shot international advertising campaigns. He is the director of Pathfinder Trust which runs Training for Africa, a work skills-based training programme which imparts skills to underprivileged communities. The cost of the photographic course is R3,500 fully inclusive with any extras for the student’s own account. There is no single supplement charged.

Also offered is a four-day painting course where attendees will learn all the techniques needed to paint a picture, including how to really see the world around them. They will discover the wonders of negative observation, sgraffiti and impasto, about dry brush and wet on wet. The course was developed by Leonie E Brown who has a BA (Hons) in Fine art and a HOD teaching diploma. The recipient of the Gregoire Boonzaaier Art Bursary, she won first prize in the fine art category of the National Volkskas Atelier. Her work is represented in a number of galleries, including the prestigious Hout Bay Gallery, Veo, de Waterkant, The Long St Gallery in Cape Town and Bordeaux Street Gallery in Franschhoek. Her work has also been exhibited in nine solo and group exhibitions. She will be assisted in the course by local artist Marijke Hingston. The cost of the art course is R6,000 fully inclusive with any extras for the student’s own account. There is no single supplement charged.

Combined courses are R8,500 for the full six days.
