ESKOM ENERGY EFFICIENCY DESIGN (article first published : 2004-06-1)

Architects, interior designers, engineers, electrical contractors, consultants, lighting specialists and anyone with a passion for design and/or efficient lighting now have the opportunity to enter the Eskom Energy Efficiency Design Competition for 2004 – with R100,000 worth of prize money to be won!

This competition was initiated in 1999 by Eskom ElektroWise to stimulate the creative and cost-effective design of luminaires, while promoting the use of compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) in the residential sector. This year, designers are challenged to incorporate energy efficiency into lighting design in the residential, commercial and industrial sectors in South Africa.

The goal of the luminaire design competition is to demonstrate that efficient lighting technologies, such as fluorescent technology and LEDs, can be used in very modern and attractive luminaires intended for residential lighting.

The building design competition is aimed at encouraging the design and production of the most innovative and efficient lighting in the commercial and industrial sectors and persuading decision-makers to purchase these highly efficient solutions. The idea is, therefore, to link energy efficiency to design excellence and to entice the best designers to conceive and design attractive, innovative and efficient lighting designs.

The categories for the 2004 EEDC are: Residential luminaire design (students) – group prize R10,000; individual prize R10,000; Residential luminaire design (professional) – prize R20,000; Best energy efficiency lighting design in a commercial building – prize R30,000, and Best energy efficiency lighting design in an industrial building – prize R30,000.

The closing date for entries is October 3, 2004. Entries will be judged by a representative panel of judges, selected on the basis of their experience and expertise in the lighting, electrical and design fields.

The competition is supported by the CSIR’s National Metrology Laboratory (NML), the Department of Minerals and Energy (DME), the Illuminating Engineering Society of South Africa, Lighting in Design, BJB through the Luminaire Component Industries (LCI), Osram, the Sustainable Energy Society of Southern Africa (SESSA), the South African Guild of Interior Designers (SAGID), the South African Institute of Architects (SAIA), Sparks Electrical News and Voltex (Phillips SA).

More information on the design, entry requirements, evaluation criteria and technical specifications, as well as entry forms, is available from the competition organisers, Communication Xellence.
