COWPARADE SOUTH AFRICA (article first published : 2004-05-12)

CowParade South Africa (www.cowparade.net) is the latest incarnation of a wild and successful art exhibition where hundreds of fibreglass cows are transformed into works of art. It is an art exhibition with a difference; the canvas is a lifesize fibreglass cow that is adorned, decorated, painted, re-imaged by local artists and displayed for public view and interaction. CowParade has run successfully in major cities worldwide New York, Chicago, London, Dublin to name a few, and is now coming to South Africa in 2004!!

The campaign is endorsed by the Department of Arts and Culture and the three major arts funding agencies, Business Arts South Africa (BASA), Arts and Culture Trust (ACT) and the National Arts Council (NAC) as a superb initiative to highlight South African art and generate funds for a worthwhile charity, CHOC- Childhood Cancer Foundation of South Africa (www.choc.org.za).

This is an invitation for the local artist community to get involved, either individually, as a group of artists or as a formal organisation and submit designs!! The applicant is encouraged to paint, sculpt, transform, decorate and adorn the cow as he or she wishes. Cows in other parades ranged from those that were simply painted a solid colour to others boasting elaborate, intricate designs. Others used mosaic tile and mirrors and some built elaborate costumes to augment the cow shapes. Some went so far as to incorporate technology in the design to create an interactive experience. The scope is as broad as the imagination!

More information regarding CowParade South Africa and the design submission process from Buz Publicity, the Public Relations company contracted by CowParade to manage the artist application process: Telephone 011 673 4995/ 9272, fax 011 388 4404 or e-mail: artist@cowparade.net
