DAVID LURIE WINS POYI AWARD (article first published : 2004-04-27)

David Lurie, former Cape Town photographer now residing in London, was recently presented with the World Understanding Award at the 61st Annual Pictures of the Year International Competition for his “poignant and telling reportage” in the book Cape Town Fringe: Manenberg Avenue is where it’s Happening.

A self-taught photographer, he has appeared on many exhibitions that have toured the world. He was part of group show at the Portfolio Gallery, London with Omar Badsha and David Goldblatt. In 2002, he was commissioned by South African History Online (SAHO) for the exhibition Bonani Africa which appeared during the World Summit for Sustainable Development in Johannesburg. Presented at Museum Africa, it was accompanied by text by John Matshikiza.

Among his current projects is The Liberated Zone revisited (working title), a book on post Apartheid ‘transformation’ in Cape Town. The book features texts by John Matshikiza, Denis Becket, Dr Shamil Jeppie, Prof Neville Alexander and Judge Dennis Davis.

Cape Town Fringe: Manenberg Avenue is where it's Happening is to be published by Double Storey Books [South Africa] in September, 2004.
