NASHUA ART IN THE PARK 2004 (article first published : 2004-04-25)

Nashua Art in the Park has grown to become the largest, outdoor art selling exhibition in South Africa. Organised by Pietermaritzburg Tourism, the inaugural event in 1962 drew only 20 artists.

This year 55 artists chosen from 150 hopefuls will exhibit their works. Participants hail from across the country for the event to sport a truly national profile.

Staged along the banks of the Msunduzi River in Alexandra Park under a lane of plane trees, the autumnal colours of falling leaves create a wonderfully romantic atmosphere, further enhanced by picnic fires in the evening.

Among the artists exhibiting at this event count KZN potter Trayci Tompkins who was the top selling artist in 2002; Mat Louwrens, a veteran of 23 events, who is renowned for his sand paintings, and last year’s top seller, Johan Manefeldt.

An extensive musical entertainment programme has been planned, featuring several musicians and bands. These include the versatile Chris Smith, iconoclastic Hairy Legged Lentil Eaters, and a number of schools performing marimba to jazz over the five days.

Excellent culinary fare will be on offer, courtesy of the N.G. Gemeente Pietermaritzburg Noord that has been retained by popular demand. School groups will be accommodated on Thursday.

Art in the Park runs from June 2 to 6 and is open daily from 10h00 to 20h00, closing at 16h00 on June 6. There is a nominal entry fee of R5 (children under 13 free.)
