FREEDOM FORTNIGHT (article first published : 2004-03-28)

Many activities will be held in Durban to celebrate a Decade of Democracy during Freedom Fortnight from April 27 to May 9, including an inter-faith religious service on April 25 in the City Hall at 14h00. Hosted by the Diakonia Council of Churches in conjunction with the World Conference on Religion and Peace, the service will celebrate Ten Years of Democracy and Freedom of Religion. All are welcome.

Throughout Freedom Fortnight, The Old Court House Museum in Aliwal Street will host A Decade of Struggle T-Shirts. This comprises a comprehensive exhibition of T-shirts produced by various KZN struggle, labour, anti-apartheid, social and union organisations. The exhibition is free of charge and all are welcome. Viewing times: Weekdays and Saturdays 08h30 to 16h00 (Sundays and public holidays: 11h00 to 16h00).

Another event lasting the period will be an exhibition of Freedom Books in the Playhouse Foyer where Adams Books will display books with a democracy/South African theme.

On April 27 at 15h00, the Umlazi Freedom Day Concert with the KZNPO takes place in the Seme Hall, Mangosuthu Technikon, Mangosuthu Highway, Umlazi. The vibrant programme will focus on works by members of the KZNPO’s new music programme and the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra and three guest choirs. The programme features Simon Phelelani Mnomiya; Mdubane, a song describing the beauty of Durban performed recently in the KZNPO World Symphony Series; East Coast Choristers, the Umlazi choir, the Old Mutual/Telkom 2002 and 2003 champions, who will perform Qinisela’s Sibisi’s Nkosi Ngihawukele (Kyrie) from his mass and Derrick Nikwe a young piano student will be performing the Mozart Piano Concerto. Tickets R10 at the door.

Opening on April 28 to run for a week, the Nu Metro Cine-Centre at the Sun Coast Casino will present Freedom Films. The programme offers a selection of movies including national and international features, documentaries and student productions focusing on issues of democracy and freedom, many in an African context. Matinee shows – Pay What You Can Donation and all are welcome.

The Durban Art Gallery’s vibrant multi-media initiative Red Eye @rt offers Vote/Votela Red Eye. Described as “The Party To End All Parties!” it will take place on April 30 at the Durban Art Gallery at 18h00. Dress in skins, saris and safari suits to enjoy this celebration of democracy and the city through freedom of fashion, art, expression, culture, design, music and dance. Tickets R20 (R15 students) at the door.

Opening on May 5 to run until the end of September at the Durban Art Gallery is 10/10 for Democracy. This exhibition will be held in conjunction with The Mercury to celebrate 10 years of collecting for the permanent collection of the Durban Art Gallery.

May 7 will see the Democracy Music Festival taking place at the Durban Port. This fantastic line-up highlights the broad wealth of local jazz in Durban. Due to public demand, the Democracy Music Festival will re-establish the popular Indian Ocean Jazz Festival of yesteryear. The Port Festival continues until May 9 which marks the close of Freedom Fortnight.
