TRAYCI TOMPKINS CERAMICS (article first published : 2004-02-29)

Ceramic artist Trayci Tompkins is to present her first solo exhibition at the Tatham Gallery in Pietermaritzburg in March. To celebrate, she has gathered together many of her favourite ceramic pieces from private collections throughout KwaZulu-Natal.

Shown alongside this artistic and “fascinating journey”, Trayci has displayed her latest range of ceramics which are available for sale.

After studying Drama and Theatre design, Trayci enjoyed a successful career in Print Media Advertising. Now working as a full time ceramic artist, Trayci produces a range of pots that are exhibited and sold successfully both locally and abroad.

Her passion and primary focus is on hand-coiled, smoke and Raku-fired ceramics, which ensures that no two pieces are ever the same.

Her fascination for ancient unearthed pottery and the naivety in their design, has led her to explore the jungles of South America and work briefly with the potters of Indonesia. Combined with the Japanese tradition of Raku and ethnic influences of local pit fired pottery, Trayci produces works that hint of the mysteries of old.

Trayci Tompkins Solo Exhibition opens at the Tatham Gallery in Pietermaritzburg on March 18 at 18h00 and runs until April 18. Gallery times: Tuesday to Sunday from 10h00 to 18h00. More details on 033 343 3480 or 083 648 8885 or e-mail: traycit@sai.co.za
