ACT INVITES APPLICATIONS (article first published : 2004-02-13)

The Arts & Culture Trust (ACT) has invited artists and others involved in cultural or heritage work to apply for funding. Applications should be made by April 16, 2004, and successful applicants will be announced in July, 2004.

ACT has the mandate of attracting and providing funding for the sustainable development and growth of arts, culture and heritage in the country. During ACTís last funding cycle, R1.2 million was given in cash grants to selected projects and bursaries.

The organisation was founded in 1994 with the financial backing of Nedbank, Vodacom, Sun International, the Dutch government and the Ministry of Arts and Culture. It funds artists in all the major disciplines including arts administration, arts education, community art, crafts, visual arts, dance, music, theatre, film and literature as well as arts festivals. The Trust has funded these activities for all of these past ten years, bar one, and places much emphasis on the ongoing upliftment of communities, groups and individuals.

It also provides bursaries to educational institutions specialising in arts and culture, allowing these institutions to select the students who should benefit. The Trust does not award bursaries to individual applicants itself.

For its forthcoming funding cycle, ACT will focus on five areas of development: job creation; creative skills; management skills; cultural diversity, awareness and understanding (the promotion of local cultures and facilitation of cultural exchange) and cultural tourism and marketing (the expansion of the local and international markets for SA culture).

People seeking funding support from The Arts & Culture Trust can download application forms or look up additional information on www.act.org.za. They may also contact 011 294 5389 (mornings only), email info@act.org.za or write to the ACT at PostNet Suite 217, Private Bag X9, Benmore, 2010.
