SILO ART WRAPS (article first published : 2003-12-10)

Tractor Outdoor, in association with patrons of the arts, Cell C, unveiled the largest art installation in Cape Town on December 6 with three 28mx17m wall wraps on the silos at the V&A Waterfront.

Built in 1924 and once the tallest structure in Cape Town, the silos were used for bulk grain storage holding up to 240,000 tons at a time. A few scattered grains remain today, 109 years later, but the silos continue to make history. As a defining landmark situated in the V&A Waterfront, the silos will showcase local artists’ interpretations of city life in a celebration of cultural diversity. A fitting tribute to a historic national heritage site.

Photographer Dale Yudeman and artist Arlene Amaler-Raviv’s collection of vibrant, multifaceted images has been wrapped around the silo’s frontage in the first local outdoor art display of its kind. Their art captures the essence of urban living, revealing the exceptional in the ordinary with provocative results. Digitally photographed, scanned and enlarged, the artwork has been secured by a team of high access specialists from Access Unlimited.

“These projects are all about making art accessible” said Murray McWilliams of Tractor Outdoor. “After the huge success of the Johannesburg Arts Campaign, Cape Town as the cultural centre of South Africa just couldn’t miss out. The incredible imagination of Cell C, the V&A Waterfront, Cape Town City’s Arts and Culture Department, Cape Tourism and The Mayor’s and City Manager’s Offices has brought this vision to life,” Murray commented. He added that “not only are we bringing art to the people, artists now have a voice to shout their talent from the Waterfront to Table Mountain.” Find out more about the project at www.bigwrap.co.za
