PAUL DU PLESSIS (article first published : 2003-11-22)

An exhibition of new works by Paul du Plessis will open at re-store in Overport on December 2.

A Durban-based artist, Paul du Plessis was born in 1951 in Florida on the West Rand. After studying at the Johannesburg School of Art, he began his career working as a junior artist in the newspaper industry during which time he had two successful exhibitions.

In 1972 he moved to Durban and continued work in the graphic design industry, before returning to Johannesburg to take up the position as studio designer at a leading advertising agency. He then joined a top graphic design agency as senior artist and soon became studio head. During this period Paul received numerous design awards, including the coveted international Clio award for packaging design.

In the 1980ís he returned to Durban and became a freelance designer to a number of top companies. It was not long before he was lured back into the advertising world, when he was approached to head up a new agency in the mid 1990ís.

Whilst running the agency, Paul returned to his roots with a series of Ndebele inspired paintings depicting African women and animals, which expanded into a number of commissions for his work. As demand grew, Paul left the corporate sector to become full-time artist.

Paulís paintings bring to bear his graphic design background, providing a rich and textural medium to each of his works. This was expanded to include handmade frames, reflecting and enhancing the textural nature of his paintings.

Working through galleries and interior designers, some of Paulís most notable commissions include Sappi, Daimler Chrysler, Farouk Bhana, the Reelin Group and Larry Welman & Assoc.

The exhibition runs from December 2 to 13. re-store is situated at 36b Galleria, 36 Overport Drive on the Berea, Durban. Contact: Sam Boylan on 031 207 5082 or e-mail: restore@yebo.co.za
