GORDART (article first published : 2003-11-17)

Gordon Froud has just taken over the Thompson Gallery in 3rd Avenue Mellville. The venue had a fine reputation so he has decided to keep its name and add his own email username to it.

Having been actively involved in the art world for just over 20 years, he has served as an artist, curator, arts administrator, educator at high school and tertiary level, advisor, art inspector, external examiner, art competition judge and most importantly as a collector. A committed artist who ran the Pelmama Academy in Soweto at one time, he has worked tirelessly to promote fine art in any way possible.

“I feel that there is particularly a need when it comes to newly graduated artists from Art - schools, Universities and Technikons that have not had the opportunity to establish themselves in the Art world,” says Gordon. “Most of these newcomers would not be considered by the major galleries because they are unknown factors.

There is a need for a new space that will serve as a “first step gallery” showing works in a clean and professional environment that can be visited by curators, gallerists, collectors, dealers, agents and corporate art consultants. The effect of this is that new artists will be introduced into the art circuit from which major galleries and curators can then select for future shows.”

He believes that his new gallery could become a bridging space between Johannesburg, Pretoria and the Vaal Triangle particularly and art schools nationwide in general. The Gallery will thus be called gordart @ Thompson Gallery.
