RED EYE ART (article first published : 2003-09-18)

Red Eye Art - this time curated by Durban dance guru Jay Pather and held in and around the City Hall on September 19 from 18h00- will be a bumper event which falls under the Celebrate eThekwini banner and welcomes in Heritage Week in true sassy Red Eye style.

Theatre, dance, installation, visual art, fashion and music will come together in an explosion of artistic energy and creativity as Red Eye pays tribute to Durban and its rich heritage. The event begins at 18h00 inside the Durban Art Gallery and Natural Science Museum before moving outside to the front of City Hall where performances will take over Farewell Square. There will also be a "warm-up" for the night's proceedings hosted by the Lovelife Truck and live Reggae band, The Meditators and Island Crew.

Inside the many gallery spaces, artists across the disciplines will present works that reflect ideas about heritage or the deconstruction of heritage from a point of view that is new, refreshing, provocative and contemporary. Outside, fashion events will be choreographed on the City Hall steps complementing the magnificent fašade of this historic building. The night then explodes into a Ballroom Dance Spectacular before ushering in a mega party with DJ's spinning wicked tracks together with the crew from the Lovelife truck and food stalls to keep the art lovers going.

The range of artists includes multi-award winning choreographer Boyzie Cekwana and his Floating Outfit Project, back from touring Sweden and Switzerland. Other companies include Fantastic Flying Fish Dance Company in a work choreographed by Quinton Ribbonaar, the Phenduka Dance Company with choreography by Sifiso Kweyama and the Flatfoot Dance Company with choreography by Llianne Loots. A theatrical tongue-in-cheek poke at heritage features Hip Hop dancers choreographed by Marise Kyd and Quincy Fynn as well as new work by Neliswa Rushualang.

Theatre work features Mlungisi Zondi and Clifford Hughes. The Durban International Film Festival will screen short films featuring the South African Avant Garde and the Centre for Fine Art, Animation and Design will present a large scale, outdoor video installation incorporating visual art produced by the students.

Visual art is by Jan Henri Booyens, Lyndon Daniels, Wendy van de Weg, Karyn Bradtke and students from the VEGA school who will team up with Storm Janse van Rensburg for a "Mobile Museum" project. There will be jewellery by Bart Krogulec and Caite McCann and poetry, performance and installation pieces by Ayanda Mabija, Zoroh, Sbu, Mlungisi Shangase and Pascar Dube. Funky fashion from the likes of Britt Cormack, Ayanda Maphumulo, Nguni Shades and Shannon Coyne before the DJ's from "Skayi" and their daredevil team of break-dancers take the stage.

Entrance "fee" is a crayon/pencil/koki/paper/pen/ruler to be given to underprivileged children so they too can create art. Waltons Stationery Co has generously agreed to match the donation made to the children by the Red Eye patrons. They have also donated stationery which can be purchased at the door for those patrons who have forgotten to bring some along.
