VOICES FROM THE BRINK (article first published : 2003-09-9)

Acclaimed artist Andrew Verster will make his first appearance on stage as part of Voices from the Brink, a mixed media collaboration of performance art at the Natal Witness Hilton Arts Festival.

Andrew will complete four canvases during this 45-minute production which features Anthony Stonier, Belinda Henwood and cellist Hettie van Wyk.

“During that time I will paint four pictures which gives me about 10 minutes a picture.” Andrew explains. “They will be taken from the wonderfully evocative text. It’ll be my first stage performance which is quite fun and as I’m not trained as an actor they haven’t given me a speaking part which is quite right! Nor will the audience see the front of me as I will be working with my back to them. Perhaps that’s what could be called “back acting”!”

There are four large canvasses involved per performance. White calico on frames, each 2.5 metres high and about 1.5 metre wide, they will fill the whole of the stage and Andrew will work on them with black paint.

When Andrew works, he always has in his right hand a postcard or larger-sized piece of paper with the information he wishes to transfer to the canvas. During Voices from the Brink, these four little drawings will be placed on an easel.

“I’ve been practising on brown paper for a week,” says Andrew. “This is a live performance so the set is blank and develops before your eyes. While I’m working, Hettie van Wyk makes beautiful sounds on her 300 year-old cello and Anthony and Belinda present the text.”

Performances of Voices from the Brink take place on September 20 at 15h30 and September 21 at 14h30 at the Old Museum at Hilton College. Book at Computicket.
