SABELO NYATHIKAZI (article first published : 2003-07-21)

The BAT Centre is hosting the first solo exhibition of the works of artist Sabelo Nyathikazi. The exhibition is entitled Inqolobane which is a traditional structure for the storage of foodstuffs.

Sabelo is a self-taught artist who has honed his talent by devouring every book he could find on painting and endlessly experimenting with his skills. Born in 1977, he has painted full time since 1986. His work has an enthusiastic local following, and he has participated in a number of competitions in KZN. This is his first solo exhibition.

"My greatest sources of inspiration have been the late Gerald Sekoto, and George Pemba," the artist says. "The issues they tackled in their work are also the ones that inspire me, and I hope to reach some of their greatness. It is not easy to gain recognition as an artist, but I am determined to follow these men's example, and establish an international reputation."

Sabelo's paintings focus on social life within his community, highlighting problems like substance abuse, peer pressure and sexual abuse.)

The exhibition runs in the Menzi Mchunu Gallery until August 7. More details from the BAT Centre on 031 332 0451.
