NONGOMA REED DANCE 2002 (article first published : 2003-06-1)

The featured artist at Bonisa Private Gallery tomorrow (June 1) will be photographer Robin Glanville. The title of his exhibition is Nongoma Reed Dance 2002.

Growing up in the Hluhluwe – Umfolozi corridor in rural Hlabisa Zululand (1950 –1954) and schooled in Johannesburg, the artist may have lost the spoken language of his Zululand childhood but he has not lost his love and respect for a vibrant culture. With its dramatic visual appeal and colourful dress, the Reed Dance has become a symbol of a proud Zulu tradition that stretches back into the mists of time. A cultural event brought to life through the poetry of a photographer’s lens; it is confirmation of the power to transform the viewer through visual language

“Travel is in my genes” says the artist. He has travelled extensively in North America, New York, Toronto, Europe-Greece, Italy, the UK, the Caribbean Nassau in the Bahamas, The Seychelles, Maldives, Sri Lanka, In Africa, Ethiopia, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Namibia and closer to home in the Cape province on numerous magazine assignments.

“The photographs are unique, depicting some incredibly beautiful Zulu costumes and beadwork,” says gallery owner Neil Wright. “The exhibition is not to be missed by anyone who is fasinated by Zulu customs and traditions.”

Watercolour artist John Simpson continues to be "No.One" – a throwback to his days as a radio actor in Springbok Radio’s Men from the Ministry - at the Gallery with his Japanese styled cards.
