INDIAN MINIATURES (article first published : 2003-05-23)

From May 22 opening at 18h00 to July 6 closing at 18h00, the Tatham Art Gallery will hold an exhibition of an exclusive collection of Indian miniature paintings owned by the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum (formerly the King George VI Art Gallery) in Port Elizabeth.

The works date from 1460 to 1850, and fall into two main categories religious and secular. Religious painting depict scenes from the lives of various Indian deities and their respective incarnations, while the vogue for secular painting arose at the Mughal courts, as a result of Persian influences.

Dr Alleyn Diesel, who has written considerably about Hinduism in Natal, will lead a walkabout of the Indian Miniatures in the West Gallery on June 10 from 13h10 to 14h00, and MACS artists, whose Fibre Miniatures are on show in their own space this month, will also do a lunch-time walkabout of the Indian Miniatures in the West Gallery on June 24 from 13h10 to 14h00.
