VISIONS OF SPORT PROJECT (article first published : 2003-05-19)

The British Council is driving an interesting project with a soccer theme, entitled Visions of Sport.

This exhibition of sports cartoons and photographs has been curated by artist/cartoonist Andy Mason and Peter Auf Der Heyde - ex Capital Radio news/sports journalist now based in Ireland, with input from Mail and Guardian cartoonist and social commentator, Zapiro who will have many of his cartoons on display and who will be a guest speaker at the opening of the exhibition. This takes place on May 21 at the Durban Art Gallery.

The aim is to get as many school groups as possible through the gallery and for them to understand the social, political and historical implications of the photographs and cartoons.

The opening of the exhibition will be quite special: visiting soccer fans will be among the guests, Baroness Helene Kennedy Chairman of the British Council will officially open the exhibition. Mason, Auf der Heyde and Zapiro will all be present Zapiro will also be speaking. There will be a short debate on the topic with presentations by key figures in the sporting fraternity entitled "Is politics ruling sport offside?"

Jay Patheršs award winning Siwela Sonke Dance Theatre have been commissioned to create a dance piece to the theme which will be performed at the opening at the Durban Art Gallery. This will be performed at 13h00 on May 22, 23 and 24 and video artist Junaid Ahmed - long time collaborator with Siwela Sonke - will be videoing the dance piece so that the video becomes an integral part of the exhibition for the duration.
