SPIER OUTDOOR SCULPTURE BIENNALE (article first published : 2003-05-17)

Public Eye invites proposals for works for the 2nd Spier Outdoor Sculpture Biennale opening in January 2004. Once again this takes place on the Spier Estate close to Stellenbosch.

Works will be confined to the immediate environs of river which passes through the Estate. Visitors can visit the site by parking at the Spier farmstall and proceeding past the lake to the vehicular bridge. Starting within viewing distance upstream from this bridge, the site extends about 500 metres downstream, under the pedestrian bridge, ending in front of the viewing platform adjacent to the Spier Outdoor Amphitheatre (see http://www.artthrob.co.za/03may/exchange.html#spier2 ).

Unlike the previous event where some of the work was studio-produced and simply presented in an outdoor context, this event requires entrants to produce works which respond to and are inextricably connected with the topography and features of the site. Care must be taken not to damage or irreversibly alter the landscape.

At the same time, works must be able to sustain themselves for the period of three months over which the Biennale runs. A second walkabout of the site will be conducted by Kevin Brand in the near future.

Proposals, in the form of drawings and supporting text, should not exceed one A3 sheet. Successful applicants will be informed in the first week of July. Funding will be made available for production of works, although participants are encouraged also to seek personal sponsorship. A catalogue will be produced.

The panel of judges will appointed by Public Eye, and will include two members of the organisation as well as other experts in the field. The closing date for submissions is June 13.

Send or deliver proposals to: Public Eye, All Star Studios, 4th Floor, The Armoury, Buchanan Square, 160 Sir Lowry Road, Woodstock , 7925, or contact telephone 021 465 5022, fax 021 465-5023 or e-mail: info@public-eye.co.za or visit www.public-eye.co.za

Just as in the first Biennale, there will be a satellite event, this time probably taking place at the Waterfront in Cape Town. Details of walkabouts and requirements will be made public in due course.

Founded in 1999, Public Eye is a Section 21 company, formed by a collection of Cape Town-based artists and cultural activists to initiate and manage art projects in the public arena with the aim of enriching the cultural life of the city and the country as a whole
