GEORGIE PAPAGEORGE (article first published : 2003-04-15)

Running in the NSA Galleries until April 27 is an exhibition of installations by Georgie Papageorge.

What becomes apparent in Georgie Papageorge's work is its complexity and enormous scale. To simplify her work should never be the objective. As with our lives and its context: our earth: nothing is simple. By learning to accept this adversity allows us to see it more clearly and maybe even realize our purpose – to grow, to learn, to be humble.

Georgie Papageorge works in a small studio outside Pretoria. Situated in what can only be described as a bird sanctuary, she has produced works that have inspired and captivated many through her local and foreign exhibitions. Some of these works are on permanent exhibition in both the corporate environment as well as museums such as the Smithsonian in Washington.

Her work over the last 15 years has explored the idea of the social and geological rift in Africa through the concept of a mutating “barrier” symbol. Vertical lines and circles within an early Judai/Christian Cross symbolism plus a red and white chevroned banner/barrier explores varying concepts of sacrifice and transcendence within specific African environments.

The works presented by the NSA specifically carry this message where Gold mine dumps in South Africa, the Sowa Salt Pan in Botswana and Mount Kilimanjaro in the Great East African Rift Valley provide the physical and social context for the notion of Schism and Rift – hence titled Kilimanjaro Through the barrier.

The second theme Africa Rifting – Lines Of Fire
