SASOL NEW SIGNATURES (article first published : 2003-04-10)

Promoting and exposing the emerging artists of South Africa to the public is the drive behind the 2003 Sasol New Signatures Competition. This is an annual competition open to all emerging artists who are older than 18 years. An overall first prize of R25,000, a judge’s award of R5,000 and five merit awards of R1,000 each will be awarded. This is the 14th time that Sasol will be sponsoring the event.

Sasol is a keen supporter of art and culture in South Africa. Its contemporary art collection comprising more than 2000 works has been collected over a period of 20 years in promotion of art and the support of artists in South Africa.

This important annual competition presented by the Association of Arts in Pretoria and sponsored by Sasol has been the launch pad for the careers of many of its previous winners. Many have gone on to become highly regarded South African artists building an ongoing vital and dynamic foundation to the visual arts in South Africa.

Artists wishing to enter this premium competition may submit a maximum of two works to the Pretoria Art Museum on June 4, or June 5 between 10h00 and 16h00.

A committee will select approximately 100 works for the exhibition and will also announce the overall winner, who will receive R25,000. Two independent judges will select a winning work with a prize of R5,000 for the artist. Five merit awards of R1,000 each will also be made.

Winners will be announced at the opening of this exhibition at the Pretoria Art Museum on June 18.

For more information and entry forms phone Nandi Hilliard or Pieter van Heerden of the Association of Arts Pretoria at 012 346 3100.
