WALKABOUT OF HOLONS (article first published : 1999-09-21)

Robert Bramwell-Jones is a South African artist living and working in London who returns regularly to South Africa to preserve spiritual links with his country of origin. His exhibition is running at Technikon Natal Art Gallery until October 6. It is a site-specific installation of daily images painted over a three-year period and assembled in books suspended from the ceiling, displayed as friezes and as multi-image grids (“archives”) on the walls.

Holon, a term coined by Arthur Koestler, describes something that is itself a whole and simultaneously a part of some other whole. Robert Bramwell-Jones considers his work “in process“ rather than product orientated, a visual journal of exploration of inner growth processes in which he draws on myths, dream imagery and memory. These images celebrate being, reflecting the joys, frailty, isolation, affection and humour of the human condition.

Two books written and illustrated by Robert Bramwell-Jones will also be on sale in the Gallery. The artist will give a walkabout tomorrow (September 22) at 12h30. Gallery hours are Monday to Thursday (08h30-16h00) and Fridays (08h30-12h00).
