HANNES HARRS AT BONISA (article first published : 2003-03-22)

Bonisa Private Gallery’s next Open Day on April 6 will feature the work of Hannes Harrs.

“The Gallery is thrilled to have this opportunity to exhibit Hannes Harrs’ work – a truly European African artist,” says Neil Wright of Bonisa Gallery.

Hannes Harrs was born in Germany in 1927 and was profoundly influenced by Africa. His daughter Sue Winchester lives in Hillcrest. She maintains that even before her father came to South Africa in 1950 he was fascinated by African artefacts that his father brought back to Germany from his visits to Africa.

“When Hannes came to South Africa himself and saw our landscapes and country, that was it, since then his passion has been to mirror Africa in his works of art,” Sue explains.

Hannes studied at the Johannesburg School of Art from 1957 to 1960. He is now a well-known artist and has had numerous exhibitions in South Africa and abroad. His works, which range from paintings and graphics to sculptures, are to be seen in many public galleries and form part of numerous private collections. Some of his works on Bonisa’s exhibition can be viewed on Bonisa’s website at www.bonisa.co.za

John Simpson, now a regular at Bonisa’s Open Days, will be seen painting his Japanese styled cards.

Bonisa Private Gallery is situated at 47 Ronalds Rd, Kloof, and the Open Day runs from 10h00 to 16h00.
