GEORGE MSIMANG (article first published : 2003-03-9)

George Msimang, one of KZNís best-loved and popular artists exhibits at the BAT Centre this month.

Born in 1951 in Lamontville, Durban, George Msimang he has been recording township scenes and addressing political and social issues in a distinctive, cartoon-like style since the late 1960ís. His paintings, although often created under difficult conditions, give the impression of joyful exuberance. His sense of humour and confident sense of colour and line has drawn considerable public acclaim for his work.

His art is represented in major local and international collections. In 1971 he was awarded a scholarship at the Academie Des Belles Artes in Rome, where he spent three years. A prolific creative force, he exhibits regularly.

The exhibition of the works of George Msimang opens at the BAT Centre on March 20 and runs until April 21 in the BAT Centreís Menzi Mchunu Gallery.
