CLAY FESTIVAL '03 (article first published : 2003-03-9)

The Gauteng Region of the Association Of Potters Of Southern Africa will be holding Clay Festival ‘03 at an exciting new venue - the Ceramic Department of the Technikon Witwatersrand Doornfontein Campus, 37 Nind Street, Doornfontein, Johannesburg from May 1 to 4. Interested international artists are also invited to participate in this event which is the biggest of its kind on the South African ceramic calendar.

The official opening will take place at 17h30 on May 1. There will be an exhibition of workshop presenters' work. It is also an opportunity for ceramists to find all the tradespeople under one roof offering the latest information on clays, glazes, kilns, books and more!

Included among the list of well-known potters offering Inspirational workshops are KZN ceramists Professor Ian Calder (Maiolica) and Lindsay Scott (throwing). Durban’s Clive Sithole will be giving an ongoing demonstration.

Others from around South Africa hosting workshop will be Hilmar Eichhoff (mouldmaking); Ian Garrett (handbuilding, burnishing and pitfiring); Meshack Masuku (throwing); Hennie Meyer (handbuilding); Peter Mthombeni (Modelling and Handwork); Caroline Schulz Vieira (Children); and John Shirley (glazing).

In addition, talks will be given by Eugene Hön - The plasticity of Clay Today; Wilma Cruise - Sculpture in Ceramics Today and Suzette Munnik while Henriette Ngako will also present an ongoing demonstration in the trade hall.
