GAZE (article first published : 2002-12-26)

Gaze is a book of photographs by Michael Meyersfeld published by Bell-Roberts Publishing. In broad terms, this is a photographic book about gay men and women celebrating their orientation. All the images were taken in Meyerfeld¹s studio. No props, just stark images capturing the essence of the sitter.

This beautiful 224 page hardcover coffee table book is covered in pink suede with the title Gaze foiled in silver. The pages are printed in full colour throughout on 170g imported matt satin paper. The book retails at R550 and is available from Bell-Roberts Art Bookstore, 199 Loop Street, Cape Town. (contact Karen on 021 4221100 or email info@bell-roberts.com), as well as selected Exclusive Book Stores nationwide and other leading bookshops.

The subjects photographed include a broad spectrum of people from performance artists, black and white priests, pregnant lesbians, DJ’s, drag queens, artists, musicians, writers, business people, activists to celebrated intellectuals like Justice Edwin Cameron and Anne Smith, (both of whom are included in the Who¹s Who in contemporary Gay and Lesbian History From World War 2 to the Present Day, editors Robert Aldrich and Garry Witherspoon)

Whilst the subjects are mainly from South Africa, the intention is not give the book a South African feel, rather to portray an international cause. The pages are interspersed with controversial comments, (religious, political, social, emotional) some detail images and personal experiences where appropriate. Provocative comments and/or essays are provided by prominent writers, giving the reader a multi-tiered view of the homosexual world.

Michael Meyersfeld works commercially as a professional advertising photographer. He has exhibited both locally and internationally and a permanent exhibition hangs in his gallery adjoining his studio. All the images in the gallery, both black/white and colour are printed in the studio darkroom and are archivally treated in accordance with international photographic standards.

The book will be launched at the end of January 2003 (dates and venues to be announced). Further information from Suzette at Bell-Roberts Publishing on 021 422 1100 or email suzette@bell-roberts.com
