KHWEZI GULE: FACE TO FACE (article first published : 2008-09-9)

Khwezi Gule is a young, proactive curator who, as co-founder of the Dead Revolutionaries Club, specialises in organising lectures and art classes. He is currently curator of the Contemporary Collection at the Johannesburg Art Gallery and co- curator of both the Esikhaleni Exhibition at the Afrika Cultural Centre and the Africa in Oslo Exhibition.

As part of its KZN Heritage Arts Festival, Kizo Arts Gallery provides an opportunity on September 19 for interested parties to meet him and learn about his work and career opportunities in arts management and curating. Although Gule’s experience is mostly in the visual arts arena, this event is equally useful and interesting to arts practitioners in other genres of the industry.

Gule’s lecture is one of the events in the Movable Arts Feast – an innovative project involving eight Durban galleries. The vision for the duration of the Celebrate Durban season is to make Durban’s premier galleries accessible, available and welcoming to visitors and residents to KZN by offering a “gallery trail” every Saturday throughout the eight weekend season which can be accessible through a hop-on, hop-off public transport shuttle – with a knowledgeable and entertaining tour guide.

In anticipation of the additional feet through the gallery, themed events or happenings will be staged at each participating gallery every Friday evening. Each of the eight participating galleries will have a turn over the course of the nine weekends.

As part of the Movable Arts Feast, each participating gallery gets an opportunity to host one event. Kizo’s involvement is hosting the internationally-respected arts administer/curator Khwezi Gule.

The lecture will take place at Kizo Art Gallery at Gateway on September 19 at 18h00.

More information or to book your space – contact Kizo’s Curator, Nathi Gumede, on 031 566 4324, fax 031 566 2494 or email: nathig@kizo.co.za
