MAXNORMAL.TV: GOOD MORNING SA (article first published : 2008-08-29)

MaxNormal.TV (fronted by the artist previously known as Waddy Jones) is a pop art crew that makes wild high-energy rap music, soft and dreamy acoustic music, music videos, short-films, hand-made limited edition soft-toys and comic books. During the exhibition at the KZNSA,

Total F**K Up: Max Normal (dress-code strictly formal) hits the streets of Cape Town to hand out flyers to one of his next-level rap shows. While Max is handing out flyers to passers by, he admits to us how insecure he is deep-down. Max attempts to overcome his little secret problem by being as honest as he can about it. Unfortunately Max has a run-in with terrible little tik-kop rapper called Bokkie who takes it upon herself to let Max know how much he sucks. Luckily Max also bumps into an optimistic bergie rapper called Duppie who sheds some light on Max's kak day.

The Way of the Dassie: Max Normal is having another big fat mental block. When his personal assistant, Yo-landi Visser, brings him a glass of milk and a cookie shaped like a cute little dassie, Max gets a cool idea. Max then shows everyone at home how to make their very own hand-made demon toys. Max makes a little pink back-to-front-bum Demon toy, which has a bum for a face and face for a bum. Max also makes a big scary pink Demon Beast 666 toy, which has two horn-like legs growing out of its head, a vagina for a nose and big growling caesarean section for a mouth. Max also makes little good-guy toys to defeat these horrible demon toys. Max makes a cute little MaxNormal toy, plus a big yellow Dassie toy to help Max defeat the evil forces that are running the show at the moment. Yo-landi is impressed.

Picnic: A conservative Afrikaans girl, Yo-landi Visser, goes home for a family reunion. Her family decides to go for a nostalgic family outing together and end it off with a picnic. During this golden time together, Yo-landi discovers the joys of coming together as a family after the children have left the house.

Spook Asem: A troubled little teenage girl called Bokkie goes for a swim in a lake after downing a huge bottle of Bioplus.

How To Draw Animals: Max Normal shows how draw a giraffe, a panda and a magic pony.

Wat Pomp? (Episodes 1 & 2): Mentally unstable rave-rapper WAD:e and his home-girl Yo-landi Visser hit the streets of South Africa to see what's pumping. WAD:e and Yo-landi have an open-minded approach to life and an unusual sense of fashion. Secretly WAD:e and Yo-landi don't know what's going on with anything, however they are totally into it! Auras pumping! Third eyes strobing! One hundred percent energy! Go! Go! Go!

MaxNormal.TV runs at the KZNSA Gallery until September 14. The KZNSA is situated at 166 Bulwer Road, Glenwood, Durban 4001. More information on 031 277 1703, fax 031 201 8051 or email: curator@kznsagallery.co.za or visit www.kznsagallery.co.za
