LIFE IS A CABARET! (article first published : 2005-09-21)

Opening at the Heritage Theatre, Hillcrest on September 27 is Life is a Cabaret, an elegant tribute to the art form of cabaret using the traditional style of this genre, popularised in the Thirties and still in evidence the world over today.

Carol Trench, well loved and renowned for her phenomenal voice and Anthony Stonier (Best Male Vocalist Award 2002 and 2003) team up for the first time in three years (remember the popular and award-winning show Letís Misbehave Ö?) with splendid accompaniment from award winning pianist and musical director Evan Roberts, with Tom Hare on trumpet, saxophone and flute. They are also accompanied by Bruce Baker (drums) and John Stengel (bass).

The talented cast will present the music and lyrics of John Kander and Fred Ebb who brought the world Cabaret, Chicago, New York New York and Zorba.

Life is a Cabaret is drawn from the recurring phrase in the popular song Cabaret, a phrase that holds a fundamental truth both in real life and on a cabaret stage.

Director Clare Mortimer is also responsible for the script into which she has woven a magical, mysterious ambience.

Expect to hear much-loved numbers such as Wilkomen, Colouring Book, City Lights, Mister Cellophane; World Goes Round; Razzle Dazzle; All That Jazz; Maybe This Time; Nowadays and New York New York.

Life is a Cabaret opens at the Heritage Theatre, Hillcrest, on September 27 to run until October 30. Tickets R150 for the show and a two-course meal with an ŗ la carte pudding menu (R120 Tuesday night and Sunday lunchtime shows). Tickets for show only are R75.

There will be two low cost previews on September 25 and 26 (R120 meal and show).

For bookings call 031 765 4197 or book at Computicket.

There will also be performances at the Ramsgate Lions Supper Club on September 23 and 24. Bookings through 082 882 9869.
