JOHNNY BE GOOD (article first published : 2005-06-15)

The Gee Jays, Durban's longest running and ever-popular comedy cabaret group, will make their debut season at the Heritage Theatre with a new show entitled Johnny Be Good which opens at the quaint new Hillcrest theatre in Hillcrest Heritage Market on June 21.

Entering their 20th year together, Gary McKenzie, John Didlick and Grant Bell will perform a carefully chosen mix of close harmony 50's swing, and rock and roll favourites. For the first time in their history they will be performing with a live band, under the musical direction of Dawn Selby.

The show will feature all the legends from the rock ’n roll era. Chuck Berry, Bill Haley, Elvis, Buddy Holly, The Everly Brothers, The Platters, Bobby Darren, Little Richard and more.

Songs include- Rock Around The Clock, Shake Rattle & Roll, Summertime Blues, The Great Pretender, Oh Boy, Lucille, Great Balls Of Fire, At The Hop and even songs from the British invasion onto the rock ‘n roll scene, The Young Ones, Twist & Shout, Jumpin’ Jack Flash and Rock ‘n Roll Music.

The show will also take a look at how rock ‘n roll came about and how it had influenced some of the greatest musicians of modern times. Expect the usual zany antics and cheeky one-liners in the show as well as a bit of a twist.

Johnny Be Good runs from June 21 to July 31. Starting times Tuesday to Saturday at 19h00 (meal) for 20h30 (show). Tickets R140 include the two-course meal and show.

Sunday lunchtime specials at 12h30 (lunch) for 14h00 (show) and the ticket price is R120 for the meal and show. There will be a one-off special preview on June 21 at 19h00 when the same ticket price applies.

Desserts are optional and there is a special pudding menu priced independent of the two–course meal.

Booking is essential on 031 765 4197. There is safe parking in the grounds of the Heritage Market complex and you can access the theatre through the underground parking area.
