D’ARTS MAGAZINE IS BACK! (article first published : 2005-06-11)

The highly popular A4 black and white D'ARTS magazine published by the Durban Arts Association is back in business!

It has been out of commission for a year during which time Durban Arts was not able to provide funding. However, the new DAA Chief Executive Officer, Gladman Ngubo, is committed to reinstating this highly valued and award-winning publication which he describes as the “soul” of Durban Arts.

The only magazine of its kind in KZN (and, possibly, the country), D’ARTS received the first print publication award (1997/98) of the Arts & Culture Trust of the President for its wide-ranging coverage of the arts.

D’ARTS reflects the brief of Durban Arts - that of promoting the arts in Durban from grassroots to professional levels in all disciplines. One of its most valuable features is its Events list, a diary of all events for the forthcoming month produced by courtesy of the KZN arts website artSMart (www.artsmart.co.za)

This means that the magazine offers a constant reference during an entire month in the same way as a monthly radio and television guide.

Confirmed long-term funding is not yet in place for Durban Arts from eThekwini Municipality but editor of D’ARTS, Caroline Smart (also editor of artSMart), has been commissioned to produce two magazines over the next two months, by which time the publication’s long-term future should be entrenched.

D’ARTS is provided free to members of Durban Arts. Annual membership fee is R62.70 (R34.20 students/senior citizens). Corporate sponsorship is also available. More details from Durban Arts on 031 312 1236 or e-mail hlengie@durbanarts.co.za

Advertising in D’ARTS is extremely reasonable and is based on quarter column blocks (5.5 x 6.5cm) at R68.40 (inc. VAT) so a full page comes in at R638.40. To advertise, contact Caroline Smart on 031 261 6036 or e-mail: csmart@iafrica.com
