LIFE IS A CABARET! (article first published : 2005-05-30)

Anthony Stonier, Carol Trench and Evan Roberts will appear in Live is a Cabaret at the Rhumbelow Theatre in Umbilo. The show is an elegant tribute to the art form of cabaret using the traditional style of this genre, popularised in the 30ís and still in evidence the world over today.

Between the three of them, Carol Trench, Anthony Stonier and pianist and musical director Evan Roberts have garnered an impressive number of awards. They will be joined by Tom Hare on trumpet, saxophone and flute.

The trio have selected the music and lyrics of John Kander and Fred Ebb, musical theatre giants who may not be household names to the extent of Rogers and Hammerstein but their canon of music includes such well known songs as Cabaret, New York New York, Maybe this Time, City Lights, Razzle Dazzle and All That Jazz, to name but a few.

The recurring phrase in the popular song Cabaret that makes the title of this show holds a fundamental truth both in real life and on a cabaret stage. Traditionally, cabaret looks at real life, the ups and downs, loves and losses and comments on them satirically or realistically in song.

Shows take place on June 10 and 11 at 20h00 and on June 12 at 18h30. The venue opens 90 minutes before show for picnic dinner.

Tickets R50. Take along food picnic baskets and braais will be available. There is limited secure parking and booking is essential. A cash bar is available (no alcohol may be brought on to the premises). Rhumbelow Theatre is situated in Cunningham Avenue off Bartle Road.
